Well, doing SEO perfectly is also creating a better experience for the user. Unless you are using black hat techniques, I would think Google actually would lobby for everyone to do SEO, as it helps them find the most relevant stuff anyways. And with "textbook perfect link building", you are bound to get some links where you cannot choose the anchor text, and that is besides the point that textbook link building suggests that you switch up your anchor text anyways. So anyways, my opinion is that as long as you are doing SEO the right way, the SEs shouldn't have a problem with it.

I've had the same question in the past, and I'm glad you're addressing it, Kevin. I haven't seen any evidence of pages getting dinged for going over the top on SEO efforts except for anecdotal evidence of raising flags when you build links too quickly, and SE are trying to determine the quality of them. I'm definitely interested in hearing others' experience.

Kevin, I love that you shared your experiences. Too many people don't pass on their negatives, and only put forward their positives. When this happens, people don't learn. I will be sure not to repeat your mistake.

Makes me think I should work on my websites more...I already have a good domain - I should probably add all the meta data and optimize my pages better.

I'm somewhat of an opportunist, and tend to start websites where I find little competition. Coming across those open market segments is pretty difficult though. Definitely great to stick with what you know, as long as what you know isn't ridiculously competitive.
